Challenge. International Humanitarian Aid Non-Profit Organization’s strategic planning director needed a resource allocation model for one the organization’s key products. One of her requirements was that she wanted an optimal distribution of resources based on certain key factors and constraints. The sources of information she was working with had copious amounts of data, not all of which was pertinent to her objective.
Approach. I analyzed the source reports, interviewed the strategic planning director to determine the relevancy of various information, extracted the relevant information and determined their relationship to each other, and created a resource allocation model using MS Excel. Using MS Excel’s Solver add-in, I calculated the optimal distribution of registered children by type and time period, taking into account key constraints, and presented this model to the strategic planning director.
Results. The strategic planning director received a resource allocation tool consisting of concise, relevant information which included a recommendation for an optimal distribution of resources.
